April ARTS E-Newsletter

Dear Friends of the Arts:

A week ago, I attended the Poetry Out Loud State Finals in Sacramento, and enjoyed one of the most uplifting artistic experiences of my life.  I watched some of California’s brightest high school students recite incredibly powerful classic and modern poetry. The second installment takes place on the floor of the California State Senate chamber before session, each contestant taking turns at the podium, accompanied by live music (courtesy of California Arts Council staff/musicians), and later meeting the State representatives from their counties. The camaraderie among the participants and the support and optimism from the people at California Arts Council and National Endowment for the arts was amazing. A special note is that one of the judges, Juan Felipe Herrera was appointed as California’s Poet Laureate just days before the competition.

Although Spring is stuttering rather than springing forward at the moment, it will eventually arrive, and with it  April’s various Earth Day celebrations in Siskiyou County, which will include the SAC gallery’s exciting new environmental art show, which will display multi-media works that are recycled, all-natural, junk or trash, or that represent a strong environmental or natural theme.

Additional exciting news is that SAC is very close to hiring a new Executive Director of Business Development (to work in partnership with the Executive Director of Operations), with the hiring committee preparing to make a recommendation to the Board of Directors at the April 5th meeting.

I wish all of you an artful and hopefully warmer and drier April.

Paula Reynolds

Executive Director of Operations
