Nancy Bryant ~ Nancy’s Pots

Artist Statement

“My work is my interpretation of design, shape and form brought into existence through the craft of throwing on a potter’s wheel and hand building or a combination of the two processes.  Classic/historical forms influence and shape many of my pieces.  Pattern and texture are drawn from nature.  My sculptural pieces require a great deal of patience to assemble.  I create and recreate, continually refining the work until it is consistent with my vision.  These pieces challenge my ability to stretch the structural integrity of handbuilding.

The combination of function and form is exciting for me.  A handle on a cup could be sculpted into an animal form.  A tray could be a swarm of smaller shapes.  I try to find lines that are pleasing, that flow, that tell me something and make me feel happy.”

Biography

“I have been a resident of the Mt. Shasta Community since the 1980s.  I am a ceramic artist.  My primary focus in the past ten years has been creating art by using native plants, fallen leaves, and the scenic majesty of Mount Shasta to motivate my work.  Ceramics won my soul many times over.  It is limitless in possibilities.  I constantly experience new techniques and approaches.  I find the pliable nature of clay best suited to expressing myself:  taking a ball of clay and turning it into a piece of art continues to excite me.  I refer to my work as pieces of art, because pottery is an art media that accepts form, line, color and texture with ease.”
