Eileen Pollock
Artist’s Statement
Since childhood I have been hauntingly fascinated with two topics: Human nature and creative expression. In regard to human nature, as I observed myself and the people in my world many questions arose: Why do we think and say what we do? Is
reality subjective? Is suffering necessary? What truly activates truth telling, soul passion and purpose?
These ruminations led naturally to a second line of questioning concerning creative expression. How many ways can I/we explore and express the myriad feelings, responses and impression of ‘Life’? Can I/we do it in a way that is safe and enriching? And most importantly, does the creative act change or effect the human condition?
Thus began a lifelong exploration of the ‘Inner Realms’. Everything was there…all that I loved, all that I detested, my pristine ideals and my murderous, crippling fears, my love and my rage, my holy self and my broken and forsaken self. I gave it all voice, without censure, through Art. And this has made all the difference!
The art took many forms and continues to do so. Dance, Improvisational Theatre, Sculpture, Story Telling, Poetry, Mask Making and Painting are just a few of my favorites. I have also been facilitating groups for the past 30 years, wherein others can deeply experience their unique creative wellsprings.
My partner, Lawrence, and I are new to Shasta Valley. We are building our own solar and alternative living spaces. This Herculean endeavor draws strongly on my creative reservoirs. Now I’m reluctantly learning that digging a septic pit, positioning the studio for maximum solar gain, and pouring a cement slab are all, in their own way, a form of Art.
The next frontier…Life as Art~!
My art can be seen at The Gallery in the Black Bear Building in Mt. Shasta and at Stewart Mineral Springs in Weed.
The images that include a living person are examples of my ‘Essence Portraits’, a visual affirmation of the Soul qualities and love nature of an individual.
