Artist Statement

“I have been living in Siskiyou County for the last 36 years.  I spent the first ten years in Scott Valley and have been in Mount Shasta ever since.  I find that the beauty of this part of the world satisfies my soul.

For me, art and creativity are combined with life.  I like to play with color and line.  Light fascinates me.  Capturing contours and motion intrigues me.  I like to explore with different mediums and to experiment with textures.  I want my colors to be rich and vibrant whether I am striving for a deep, intense palette or a soft, gentle feeling in my finished work.  I want the white of the canvas to make the pictures glow from inside, just as I believe creativity should flow from all parts of my life.

I have always been drawing, painting and making things.  I’ve studied art history, painting, drawing, photography, printmaking and ceramics.  Today my favored mediums are oil paint, chalk and pencils.  I have taught both children and adults to draw and paint.  It brings me pleasure to see someone discover hidden creativity.

Teaching to me is sharing all the things I have discovered.  Painting is a way of reducing the world to areas of color.  Drawing simply takes looking at things from a different perspective.  Maybe that means a perspective within your soul, but acquiring the skills to express that on paper or canvas and familiarity with the medium you choose is essential.  I teach with the intention of explaining and exploring together with each student.
