Carol Jenkins
Artist’s Statement
“In my painting I explore the universal, deeply emotional, sometimes transcendent experience of light emerging through darkness. Using acrylic paint, gouache, pastels, ink and oil stick, I try to convey the way grief breaks open to reveal hope, the way pain and joy are intermingled, the way each moment brings something new, often when we least expect it. I am drawn to abstract painting because it so clearly reveals the visual language of contrast, texture, movement, color and form. In addition to the instruction of a number of artists, including Eloise Larson and Heidi Shonkoff, I credit my love of painting to the deep pleasure I have always felt looking at the natural world.
In the rest of my life, I am a practicing psychotherapist, and my medium is largely words. I love finding words that open new perspectives to life’s experiences. ButI also love expression without words. When painting, I am thrilled when words drop away and I find a visual depiction of the emotions, the longings and the sense of wonder that reside within the human heart.”
