Artist Statement about the Rainbow Web, “Soft Rainbow” (shown below)
By Brooke Nuckles
Created in 2002

“The rainbow web is a vision come into form. A map of constellations, a prayer for wholeness. It is a celebration of beauty and color. Originally this work hung stretched in a large arching window of Wildberries Marketplace in Arcata, California, a place where rainbows often visit the watery skies. The colors are handwoven, knotted, crocheted, and macramed loosely. The patterns were intuitively learned in a process discovered while attending an art academy in Ljubljana, Slovenija. I wanted to mimic the constellations, the lines on a map, the one step forward two steps back patterns I followed. The resulting irregularity and chaotic lines, patterns and spirals, stars, and sacred geometrical shapes were made with minimal conscious intention. The movement of my hands, the dedication to the art work, the repetitive looping and twisting, touching and pulling of the fiber were my focus.

The ribbon magic and conscious connection brought this work to the stage again. I collected ribbons from many sisters, including my mother. The layers of ribbon, string, yarn, thread, fabric, and found objects were knotted with great focus and intention towards conveying concepts of awakening and recognition of perennial vision. An offering and acknowledgement of conscious connection.”

These photos, taken at the String Cheese Incident festival at Horning’s Hideout in August of 2005 show the next phase in the life of the rainbow web. Exhibited in the shady forest between the trees and the sunlight, the rainbow web finds a new home and continues to evolve as a dynamic and beautiful art piece.

Brooke’s work is featured on the Art Giving Heart DVD video, produced by SAC in 2004.
